At Canada Bay Club, seniors form a very important part of our community. They are our longest serving members and we make it a priority to contribute to organisations that assist older people in the local area to help give them the support and services they need.

Our kids in the Inner West are getting into the running and athletic season with lots of running initiatives and running groups to choose from. Ken is part of the Lau family, who together have made Baysia Chinese Restaurant a favourite in Sydney’s Inner West for 35 years. After starting out as a waiter 20 years ago, these days Ken oversees operations and supports his father Wing Lau with day-to-day running of the restaurant. The Stitching Hearts patchwork group formed 12 years ago with the aim to create beautiful quilts to distribute to those in the community who need a little warmth and care in their lives. The team members spend hours donating their time and efforts to make amazingly intricate quilts to donate to various charity groups, individuals and hospitals.

Walking and running represent some of the easiest, most effective and affordable ways to stay fit. With the opportunity to exercise in the outdoors, pounding the pavement also makes for a social way to keep up with friends and boost your heart rate at the same time.

In the Inner West suburb of Canada Bay is an inspiring school called Lucas Gardens. You may have heard of it – it’s been educating children with special needs for 30 years. One of Canada Bay Club’s long-time members, Jimmy Sanders, is Senior Giraffe Keeper at Sydney’s iconic Taronga Zoo. We’ve long supported Jimmy’s goals of giraffe conservation by donating funds to his research efforts. Earlier this year, Jimmy travelled to Uganda’s Kidepo Valley National Park for a field trip. In the 2014-2015 financial year, Canada Bay Club distributed more than $400,000 to community organisations in the Five Dock area. Through this funding, local schools purchased books and laptops. Sporting teams bought jerseys and sporting equipment and paid for first aid officers to attend their games. Other community groups used the funding to provide social group activities and outings for their members.
